Celebrity League Coming Down to Wire

One of the highlights of the World Championship of Fantasy Football event in Las Vegas was the Celebrity League Draft.  Twelve celebrity players – such as basketball legends John Salley and Gary Payton, actor Bill Bellamy, poker player Dennis Phillips, and many others.

Paired with a fantasy football expert, the question is who will be the celebrity that comes out with the league title and the financial prize for their charity.

Who will come out with the bragging rights?

With only three weeks left in the fantasy season – league playoffs are in weeks 15 and 16 – things are getting tight in a very competitive league.

The league is broken down into three, four-team leagues.  Only five teams in the league have a winning record – two of which are in the same division.

Casey Owens has the league’s best record (9-2) and the most points (1453.20) and is leading the Schussman Division.  The balance in Owens’ team is amazing and truly the reason for his six-game winning streak.  Aaron Rodgers has been an above average fantasy quarterback for sure and has been helping Owens bring home some great point totals.  The real key to his team has been at the skill positions.  How is this for a lineup – Steve Slaton, Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss, Lee Evans, and Willie Parker back from his injury.

Owens will be tough to beat if those stars can remain healthy and consistent for the next five weeks.  Gary Payton (7-4) is hot on his heals and has a big time matchup with Owens this week.

In the Pappano Division, two teams are tied with a 7-4 record and both are headed in different directions.  Team Open Sports, managed by former football player Don Silvestri, is still tied for first in the division but has lost three straight.  His team has a winning record due to the great play of Kurt Warner and has the fourth highest point total in the league (1413.65).

Tied with Silvestri is Poker Player Dennis Phillips who has been cruising with five straight wins.  Phillips has been riding the hot hand of his running game – Frank Gore, Thomas Jones, and Warrick Dunn – who has been the key to his resurgence.

In the Kadlec Division, Bill Bellamy is leading with a 6-5 record and the second highest point total in the league (1440.20).  Bellamy has won two straight and much like Phillips he has been cruising due to a hot running game.  DeAngelo Williams (who has been one of the real bright spots of the NFL season), Maurice Jones-Drew (who has been finding the end zone lately), and Matt Forte (who could be rookie of the year) have been wonderful for Bellamy.

Outside of Owens, there doesn’t appear to be a dominant Celebrity League team.  This baby is going to be fun to watch the rest of this season.
